The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

  1. Just wanted to say that I love the “Pantone” tags for your navigation links!

As for business cards, I think printers owe it to their customers to advise against glossy or coated paper/stock, because many people make notes when they accept cards and it’s hard to write on such surfaces.

I would agree completely, but I would go further.

The same is true for other jobs you must write on, like business reply cards, forms, or even school posters with a knock-out area in which to hand write a teacher’s name or other school information.

If the base paper substrate is not only a coated stock but also covered with a varnish or aqueous (or UV) coating, writing on it can be impossible. You can always knock out an area (i.e., not apply the varnish, aqueous, or UV coating to a particular area) if you will need to write in that spot.

It is also wise to discuss this with your printer if you plan to inkjet an address on your job. The inkjet ink needs a flat, but not glossy, surface to which to adhere. Not all mailshops have the special equipment, chemistry, or skill to inkjet addresses directly on UV or aqueous coating. A special ink formulation is required if you need to inkjet addresses on aqueous coating, and both a special ink and a dryer are needed to inkjet addresses on UV coatings.

  2. I’ve gone ahead and bookmarked http://www.printindustry.com/blog/?p=1 at Digg.com so my friends can see it too. I simply used All You Need to Know About Business Cards Printing | Printing Industry Blog as the entry title in my Digg.com bookmark, as I figured if it is good enough for you to title your blog post that way, then you probably would like to see it bookmarked the same way.

Agreed. Ultimately, business comes down to two people making contact, developing trust, and exchanging value of some sort. It is personal. And nothing is more personal than exchanging well designed business cards that say something about your service and your commitment to quality. In an electronic world, with the Internet as prevalent as it is, I think quality business cards are an increasingly valuable marketing asset.

  6. Tim Sajt says:

This is very useful information about printed business cards. Great work!

    Thank you.

    • admin says:

Thank you. I think a well-designed business card conveys a world of information about your business. Like a website, it is one of your potential client’s first touch points with your company. Beyond everything else, a business card is an advertisement for your products and services.

  7. Business cards are still useful for any business because they give a great exposure to a business. But a business card is only helpful when it is well designed and printed with a good material so it can catch the eyes of customers.
