The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Large Format Printing: Details of a “Non-Glass Cling”

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015

I received a request today to install a series of non-glass clings at a local movie theater. These fit into the category of standees, just as the one-sheets and even the giant beach ball for the movie Rio fit this category. Non-glass clings also require digital large format printing capabilities for their creation, and they employ an interesting base substrate and adhesive. (more…)

One Sheet Posters at the Movies

Sunday, August 2nd, 2015

Movie theaters seem to be undergoing a transformation. As installers of standees, banners, one sheets, etc., my fiancee and I recently had the opportunity to enter one of the new cinemas to install a one-sheet (a large format print poster for an upcoming film). (more…)

Thinking in Large Format Print : Striking Designs

Friday, July 24th, 2015

Having traveled in both the world of fine arts (my fiancee and I do art therapy with the autistic) and the graphic arts (as a designer, art director, and consultant, to name a few), I have come to firmly believe that a few principles of good design pertain to both. (more…)

Large Format Printing: HP and KBA Inkjet Box-Printing

Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

Corrugated board sounds about as sexy as wet tissue, but as I recently read a press release from HP and KBA, I started to develop more of an interest in the subject. (more…)

Large Format Printing: A Scary Ouija Board Poster

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

I was out at a movie theater installing a standee this week, a large flat-card (an approximately 5-feet by 8-feet image on an easel structure) promoting an upcoming film. On my way out of the theater, I noticed a table with stacks of small posters, presumably for moviegoers to take home. I thought this was a novel idea. I found one that appealed to me and brought a part of the “moviegoing experience” back to my home as well. (more…)

Sticker Printing: Some Thoughts on Window Signage

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

I had to install a window static cling in a theater last night. Ironically, it was only 8.5” x 11” in size, the dimensions of a sheet of letterhead. Given all the standees I’ve installed with my fiancee, from a 15-foot, multi-level dinosaur that reached the tiles of the theater’s suspended ceiling (and even lifted one tile up slightly) to the giant beach ball for the movie Rio, I’m used to large standee and banner installations. This was very small. It was to be installed in the ticket window. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Fooling the Viewer’s Eye

Monday, September 15th, 2014

My fiancee and I were driving back to our apartment tonight, when she noted a large format print banner hanging from the side of a multi-tiered parking lot. Being somewhat unfamiliar with the neighborhood (we’re still displaced from our burned-out house), I saw what I expected to see: a graphic image with a type treatment hanging above a section of the parking lot wall composed of bricks. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Making Final Banner Art Files

Thursday, August 7th, 2014

I’ve been working with a print brokering client recently to produce a large format print banner stand. When she asked me about specifications for producing the final artwork, I brought her question to the printer who will produce the job. However, I also did some outside reading on the subject. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Banner Stands and Table Throws

Monday, August 4th, 2014

My print brokering client has branched out. She started with business cards and then a brochure. From there she has extended her order to retractable banner stands and table throws, and she may even need custom screen printing for t-shirts. (more…)

Large Format Printing: See-Through Window Graphics

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

How do they do that? Have you ever seen a large format print graphic covering an entire bus, including the windows? How do the passengers see out of the bus?

Large format, perforated window media is the answer. This inkjet printing substrate, made of vinyl with small holes across its entire surface, is imaged on one side with inkjet equipment and left blank on the other. When applied across the surface of a bus, including the metal walls of the vehicle and the windows, this provides an awe inspiring view of the graphic image while only lowering visibility a little. It is also a significantly larger image than was previously possible to manufacture or apply to a vehicle. (more…)
