The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Large Format Printing: After You Print It, What Next?

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013

Large format inkjet printers are all the rage these days, with environmental graphics, vehicle graphics, and point of purchase signage sprouting up all over the nation. The custom printing process seems rather straightforward, albeit increasingly fast and accurate. But what happens after you print your job? (more…)

Large Format Printing: Cosmetics Environmental Design

Friday, October 25th, 2013

In addition to installing “standees” and large format print signage at movie theaters, my fiancee and I install environmental displays for a high-end cosmetics firm. As an example of large format printing, custom screen printing, and the overall marketing effect of a sophisticated environment, I have found these installations to be very instructive. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Sidestep the Pitfalls in Banner Design

Monday, August 19th, 2013

I’m designing a banner for a trade-show package that will include business cards, oversized marketing postcards, and the large format print banner itself, which will be loaded into a banner-stand assembly. Here’s some more information on this design job, which I’ve been describing in recent blog entries. Hopefully the descriptions will help you sidestep technical issues in your own marketing design work. After all, it’s very easy to turn a gorgeous custom printing job into an unprintable mess. (more…)

Large Format Printing: White Ink Makes Movie Standees “Pop”

Monday, August 12th, 2013

I’ve noticed a new trend in the standees I’ve been installing recently: the use of white ink as a background on clear plastic sheets. And, for that matter, I’m also seeing more use of the acetate sheets themselves as a design element in the standees. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Maps Provide More Than Just Directions

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

When was the last time you used a physical, printed map to navigate from point A to point B? Let’s say you’re traveling in a new town, or trying to find a location in part of your own town with which you are unfamiliar. If you’re like most people these days, you use a GPS (global positioning system) dependent on satellites circling the globe. Or you type your location into your iPhone (also a GPS) or your BlackBerry. Mostly this has eliminated the need for large format print maps—but at what cost? (more…)

Large Format Printing: Complexities of Standee Design

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

I just spent five hours with my fiancee installing the new Despicable Me 2 standee in a local theater. Close observation of this “whack-a mole” game, which is the size of a small car, provides an education in everything from marketing theory to multi-level lamination, pattern gluing, and intricate folding and diecutting. If you are alert, you can learn a lot about custom printing while assembling a standee. (more…)

Large Format Printing: A Confluence of Developing Technologies

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

I’ve been reading a number of articles and promotional pieces on large format printing presses. The technology is improving in leaps and bounds, providing options for large format signage, point of purchase displays, fleet and vehicle graphics, window graphics, backlit displays, and packaging. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Printing Bikinis and Houses

Monday, February 18th, 2013

In the last PIE Printing Blog article, I discussed novel uses for 3D custom printing, including the specifications Nokia has made available to enable phone owners to 3D-print their own phone cases, and a stem-cell 3D printing firm called Modern Meadow that 3D prints hamburgers. (more…)

Large Format Printing: New Presses from AGFA

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Digital printing manufacturers are getting more serious—and creative—with their offerings. I recently read about two AGFA products, the :M-Press Tiger and :M-Press Leopard, which combine large-format flatbed inkjet printing and custom screen printing in various (changeable) configurations. (more…)

Large Format Printing: “People Cut-outs”

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

Have you ever seen a street vendor offering to take photos of passersby with a large format print of the president? Or maybe a celebrity or movie star? (more…)
