The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Digital Printing: Scodix Enhances Metallics and Textures

Monday, July 1st, 2013

I did some research today after reading an article on Scodix in PackagingEurope (5/6/13). Scodix allows custom printing vendors to digitally print multiple metallic colors on a single press sheet, in one pass, without foil stamping or dies. Scodix also allows providers to offer variable density embossing and textures. All of this is digital, and any combination can be produced on the same commercial printing press sheet. (more…)

Digital Custom Printing: Museum Quality Required

Saturday, June 8th, 2013

I recently read an article in Graphic Repro On-line (4/17/13) that acknowledges just how far digital printing has come. “HP Indigo 10000 Prints for the National Gallery” strikes me close to home. I live a short drive from the National Gallery, and I recently attended the Pre-Raphaelite exhibit. I looked through the art books in the gallery shop afterwards and was reminded of just how high the standards are for print books sold in this art museum. (more…)

Digital Custom Printing: Indigo B2 Format Opens Doors

Friday, May 24th, 2013

In Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe, the number “42” is presented as “the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.” (more…)

Digital Commercial Printing: Personalization is King

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

In the 1967 film The Graduate, one of the older characters, Mr. McGuire, tells Dustin Hoffman’s character, Benjamin, that the future is (in one word): “plastics.” In the world of printing, I’d say the word is now “personalization.” (more…)

Digital Custom Printing: 3D and Inkjet for Fashion Items

Monday, May 20th, 2013

I’m seeing a lot more variety in the use of digital 3D and fabric custom printing within the fashion world, and I find this extremely exciting. It shows that print is more than ink on paper. It also shows that there’s a market for the mass customization afforded by digital custom printing. (more…)

On Demand Book Printing: Why You Request a Proof

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Old habits die hard. And this goes for print book proofing as well. Choosing a particular type of proof without considering your goals misses the point of proofing. Certain proofs are not always appropriate for a book run. (more…)

Custom Printing: Addressing Problem Photos

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

I may have mentioned this before. I’m brokering the custom printing for a job with problematic photos. They’re from World War II. The job is a short-run book, but this is really irrelevant because the information I’m sharing here can be used for any commercial printing job involving photos: a brochure, a book, a calendar, anything. (more…)

Short-run Book Printing: Ways to Cut Costs

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

On this custom printing job, we’re trimming the book costs to the bone. A print brokering client of mine is producing a family history from the Second World War. He needs to keep costs down since he will be paying the bill himself. However, it’s his legacy. Therefore, the book has to look really good. (more…)

Commercial Printing: The Direction of Digital Printing Is Up, Up, Up

Saturday, November 24th, 2012

I read an interesting article today about the future of digital custom printing. It seems to be very, very bright. The article on WhatTheyThink.com, entitled “drupa 2012, the Inkjet drupa…Again? The New Face of Print” notes that “…there were 46.1 billion color digital pages printed in 2010, and that number will jump to nearly 130 billion by 2015.” (more…)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

A colleague brought to my attention an article from Zdnet.com, “The Print Tech That’s Turning Saving Pixels into Saving Millions,” written by David Shamah and reprinted from Tel Aviv Tech. (more…)
