The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Book Printing: Short-run/Quick-turn Options

Sunday, January 3rd, 2016

As a printing broker, I’ve been providing book printing services for one particular client for about a decade. I’ve always taken the print book to the same shop because this printer has done such a good job for such a reasonable price. (Although periodically I have gotten multiple bids to prove this to my client.) (more…)

Book Printing: Signatures Don’t Always Have to Be Four or Eight Pages

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

I just learned something revolutionary today. You don’t always have to make your signatures four or eight pages when you’re producing a print book. (more…)

Book Printing: A Page-Design Case Study

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

A dear friend of mine from college designs print books. She used to be an editor. Now she both edits and designs textbooks and annual reports for government organizations and NGOs (non-government organizations). She’s a great designer, self-taught, so sometimes she will run a book design past me asking for advice. (more…)

Book Printing: The Virtues of Unique Cover Designs

Tuesday, October 20th, 2015

My fiancee and I went to Barnes & Noble yesterday to get a birthday gift and card for a friend. We had been advised by a mutual relation that he wanted a particular print book about Christopher Columbus: a paperback best seller. (more…)

Custom Printing: Designing for Web and Print Books #2

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

I have a dear friend from college who designs print books for government agencies and NGOs. Periodically she sends me mock ups for feedback. She is in the curious position of designing textbooks that have to be readable in both Internet and print book format. After I spent about an hour with her last night reviewing page spreads and making design suggestions, I thought her design work would make a good follow-up article on designing books for Web and print. (more…)

Book Printing: Binding Problems with Book Signatures

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

I think nothing is more unsettling to me than an email or phone call from a customer with a printing problem. I always want to please my print brokering clients, but sometimes this just doesn’t happen–at least on the first attempt. (more…)

Book Printing: A Color-Swatch Book on a Shoestring

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

I have a printing client who needs to produce multiple color books cheaply. I’ve been working with her over the past year and have written blog postings about her books. (more…)

Book Printing: Don’t Blindly Trust Delivery Paperwork

Thursday, September 10th, 2015

Part of being a good print buyer is being a proficient sleuth when it’s necessary. When something seems confusing or goes wrong, or when you just can’t get the answer you need, it pays to do your own research. Not all responses to your questions, however confident in their tone, will be accurate—no matter how well intentioned. (more…)

Print Book Production: Boxed Sets

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

I believe the term is “critical path” in project management speak. What this really means is that certain processes within the flow of production will take the most time, and everything else that depends on this critical sequence of events must conform and take this into account. (more…)

Update on the Book Set

Monday, June 15th, 2015

I mentioned in a recent PIE Blog article that a client of mine is producing a set of 6” x 9” booklets that will be inserted into a printed, corrugated box sleeve. Getting them to fit in the box is crucial (not too tight, and not too loose), and this challenge has been compounded by my client’s not having a firm page count for the print books. (more…)
